In an industry where celebrity beauty brands seem to pop up faster than the latest TikTok skincare trend, Ramona Zamzam is taking a different approach. The actress, public figure and founder of Woots Skin believes that beauty begins long before foundation, concealer or a perfectly blended blush enters the picture. For her, it starts with clean, healthy skin, and that means paying just as much attention to removing makeup as wearing it.
Her journey into the beauty business was born from personal experience. Spending long hours in front of the camera, enduring demanding filming schedules and wearing makeup for extended periods gave Ramona a firsthand understanding of why proper makeup removal matters. Rather than simply lending her name to another beauty label, she wanted to create a brand that addressed a real, everyday skincare need. The result was Woots Skin, a Malaysian-born brand on a mission to make makeup removal more effective, accessible and, dare we say, a little more exciting.
Because let's be honest, makeup removers don't always get the same glamorous treatment as serums, moisturisers or that one viral blush everyone suddenly needs. Ramona saw an opportunity to change that narrative, swapping the usual plain and predictable approach for playful packaging, a distinctive product range and formulas developed with performance in mind. At the heart of Woots Skin is a straightforward philosophy: skincare should deliver results without demanding a luxury-sized budget. It's a belief that challenges the idea that a higher price tag automatically means a better product, encouraging consumers to look beyond brand hype and pay closer attention to what actually works for their skin.
But building a homegrown beauty brand in an increasingly crowded market takes more than a cute bottle and a clever concept. It requires consistency, consumer trust and the willingness to stand by your vision, even when the industry seems to be moving in an entirely different direction. While makeup might offer a faster route to commercial success, Ramona chose to focus on the less flashy but equally essential side of beauty. For her, the goal has never been simply to sell another product. It's about helping people build better skincare habits, understand what they're putting on their skin and feel confident in the choices they make.
That commitment is reflected in Woots Skin's growing product portfolio, from the Melt Away cleansing balm that found its moment amid the cleansing balm boom to Fresh Fade micellar water, a more personal passion project created with sensitive skin in mind. Although the latter may not be the brand's bestseller, its recognition as Best Makeup Remover for Sensitive Skin at Fathom's Finest in Beauty Awards speaks to something Ramona values deeply: creating products that address genuine concerns and make a difference in people's routines.
As Malaysia's beauty industry continues to evolve, local brands are increasingly finding their footing alongside international names. Ramona sees this as an opportunity for homegrown businesses to prove that they can deliver quality, creativity and effective formulations without losing sight of their roots. She also believes there is room for Malaysian beauty to become more distinctive by drawing inspiration from local ingredients and cultural identity, rather than simply following whatever happens to be trending overseas.
Of course, moving between the entertainment and beauty industries has also shaped how Ramona connects with her audience. Being in front of the camera has taught her the value of storytelling, while running a skincare business has reinforced the importance of authenticity. After all, consumers can tell when a brand's message feels personal and when it sounds like another carefully rehearsed sales pitch. For Ramona, using her own products daily, particularly after a long day of shooting, is part of that connection. She knows the problem because she has experienced it herself, and she wants her audience to understand the thought behind the products she creates.
So, what does the future look like for Woots Skin? Ramona hopes it becomes the name people instinctively think of when they need a makeup remover that is cute, affordable and, most importantly, effective. It's an ambitious goal, but one grounded in a philosophy that feels refreshingly uncomplicated: beauty doesn't need to be unnecessarily expensive, skincare doesn't have to be boring, and removing your makeup deserves more credit than it gets.
We sat down with Ramona to discuss the beliefs that shaped Woots Skin, the realities of building a beauty business in Malaysia, and why she is determined to give makeup removal the spotlight it deserves. From creating products for sensitive skin to challenging the industry's obsession with trends and price tags, she shares what it takes to turn a personal beauty essential into a brand with a purpose, and why sometimes the most important step in your beauty routine is the one you take at the very end of the day.
AN INTERVIEW WITH RAMONA ZAMZAM
“When I was creating Woots Skin, the one belief I refused to compromise on was that beauty should never rely 100% on makeup. Without clean, healthy skin, makeup will always fall short. Even though it wasn’t the easiest business decision, believe me when I say this - every year almost every celebrity was coming out with their own makeup brands, and makeup sells faster than skincare, I stood firm. Woots Skin was born from my belief that clean skin is the first step to confidence, wellness, and everything that follows. Its a niche industry but I have faith in it. ”
Woots Skin is building a loyal following in a beauty market that's more crowded than ever. When you were creating the brand, what was the one belief about skincare that you refused to compromise on, even if it wasn't the easiest business decision?
You've experienced the beauty industry from different perspectives—as a consumer, a public figure, and now a founder. What surprised you the most after stepping behind the scenes and seeing how skincare products are actually developed?
“I was surprised to discover how big the price differences are between brands, even though they use the same ingredients. Since people often complain about local pricing, I decided to make Woots Skin affordable. Honestly if you can do your research, you shall be smart at purchasing not depending on the hype of the brands as long as it works on your skin.”
“The one thing I care about most is visible results. People choose products because they see them work. For me, it wasn’t enough to just create something that feels nice or aesthetic looking. Every ingredient in Woots Skin is carefully chosen to truly eliminate makeup and leave skin clean, because that’s the whole idea of Woots Skin. ”
Many founders talk about creating products that work, but very few talk about creating products that people genuinely enjoy using. When you're developing a new Woots Skin product, which matters more to you: visible results, the sensory experience, or the emotional connection people have with it—and why?
If someone picked up a Woots Skin product without ever seeing the logo, what do you hope they'd instantly recognise as uniquely "Woots"?
““Oh my goodness I didn’t know Malaysia has such a cute brand, such a different range for a whole bunch of makeup removers!” I wanted to come out from the boring & plain concept of makeup removers, and I believe Woots Skin can be the pioneer of makeup removers that will be remembered. ”
“The biggest turning point is when brands acknowledge TheCiksu’s hard work. TheCiksu was once invited as a speaker for a makeup demonstration and represented Malaysia on a brand trip. The impact got me to where I am today. I believe my hard work shows results and manifesting is the key, dreams do come true. ”
Looking back, what has been the biggest turning point in your career, and how did it shape the person you are today?
“For me, being part of Malaysia’s growing beauty story means showing the world that local brands can stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with global names while staying true to our roots. Most importantly, I want Woots Skin to represent the confidence of Malaysians : affordable yet luxurious, effective yet enjoyable, and always rooted in the belief that clean skin is the foundation of beauty.”
What does it mean to you for Woots Skin to be part of Malaysia's growing beauty scene, and how do you hope the brand reflects the creativity and confidence of Malaysians?
Malaysia's beauty scene has evolved dramatically over the past few years, with local brands gaining global attention. As a homegrown founder, what do you think Malaysian beauty brands do exceptionally well that deserves more recognition internationally?
“I think Malaysian beauty brands deserve recognition internationally because they excel at layering cultural authenticity into modern formulations, even though we are still working on it. Unlike many global players who chase trends, local founders should be using more of our own ingredients such as rice, bunga raya and so on, while still delivering contemporary efficacy.”
Consumers today are more informed than ever. They're reading ingredient lists, questioning marketing claims, and expecting transparency. How has this shift changed the way Woots Skin communicates with its community?
“Woots Skin tries to focus more on spreading awareness on social media when it comes to removing makeup and taking care of your skin. We don’t just showcase the products, but we also talk about how Woots Skin can help the consumers to improve their skin from time to time. Our ingredients can be found clearly on the product, we’ve got nothing to hide and we’re more than happy for consumers to do their research on them. ”
“That will be Fresh Fade micellar water, and yes, it’s not our best seller. For years, I personally know a lot of friends who suffer from sensitive skin. Therefore I decided to come out with something gentle and suitable for sensitive skin. Melt Away cleansing balm blew off immediately especially with the cleansing balm trend, but secretly I always know Fresh Fade will get the attention as well as it is truly a holy grail for sensitive skin. Within less than 2 years, Fresh Fade won the best makeup remover for sensitive skin and i couldn’t be prouder that it has helped many people soothe their sensitive skin while removing makeup. ”
Founders often have a product they're secretly most proud of, even if it isn't the bestseller. Is there a Woots Skin product you feel deserves more attention, and what makes it special to you personally?
Looking five years ahead, what conversation do you hope people are having about Woots Skin that they're not having today?
“I hope whenever people talk about Woots Skin, it will be “Oh you wanna get makeup remover? Go get Woots Skin, its cute but affordable at the same time, most importantly it works.””
You've spent years in front of the camera as an actress, and now you're building a brand behind the scenes. Has storytelling in entertainment influenced the way you tell Woots Skin's story, and what have both worlds taught you about connecting with people authentically?
“Oh yes it has a big influence. Due to the crazy acting schedule and the amount of makeup that I have to use all day long, it resonates with me so much when it comes to removing makeup. I am proud to use my own brand on a daily basis especially when I finish shooting, and I’m more than happy to share with my fans regarding the process. What both worlds taught me about connecting with people authentically is that people believe you more as a founder when you personally use your own product. ”
