TYPE 11: Ressence’s Take on What a Modern Watch Should Be

In a world where watches are either stuck in nostalgia or racing toward sci-fi fantasy, Ressence chooses a different lane. The new TYPE 11 doesn’t try to be futuristic for the sake of it, nor does it lean on heritage tropes. Instead, it lands confidently in the present — a watch designed for now, built with intention, and engineered to feel both familiar and refreshingly different.

At the heart of this release is a major milestone for the Belgian watchmaker: the Ressence Werk RW-01, the brand’s first in-house movement. Designed specifically to power Ressence’s patented ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System), the movement creates a seamless relationship between the mechanism and the way time is displayed — a philosophy that has always defined the brand.

A Watch That Feels Instantly Ressence

The TYPE 11 is arguably Ressence’s most complete creation to date. It combines patented time display and power-reserve indication with practical details like a caseback window to observe the movement, a lever for manual winding and time-setting, and 3 ATM water resistance. Everything is deliberate, nothing is decorative for the sake of it.

Its Grade 5 titanium case leans into classical watchmaking proportions, with lugs and a rounded, pebble-like silhouette that sits comfortably and confidently on the wrist. It’s refined, but not fragile. Modern, but not loud.

Above the convex titanium dial sits a domed sapphire crystal, revealing the brand’s signature rotating discs that display hours, minutes, seconds, and power reserve — all without hands, a crown, or traditional indices. It’s unconventional, yet surprisingly intuitive.

The TYPE 11 launches in three colourways — Pine, Sky, and Latte — each bringing its own personality through contrasting ceramic power reserve balls and a colour-matched seconds marker. The result is subtle character rather than flashy aesthetics.

To finish the look, Ressence offers four bracelet options: leather, rubber, a leather-rubber hybrid, and a titanium Milanese mesh. The Milanese mesh, in particular, stands out as a rare addition in watchmaking, offering durability, breathability, and lightweight comfort in one sleek package.

A Smarter Way to Track Power

One of the TYPE 11’s most intriguing details is its patented power-reserve display. The watch holds up to 60 hours of power — enough to take it off on Friday night and still find it running on Monday morning.

Instead of a traditional gauge, Ressence introduces ceramic micro-balls that visually indicate the power level. As the watch winds — whether through wrist movement or manual winding — lighter ceramic balls gradually appear while darker ones fade away. When power drops, the process reverses.

It’s a simple, almost playful visual system that makes mechanical complexity feel easy to understand, turning a technical feature into something intuitive and engaging.

The Engine Behind the Experience

Inside the TYPE 11 sits the Ressence Werk RW-01, developed in collaboration with a specialist Swiss movement developer and engineered to meet COSC compliance standards.

Unlike traditional round watch movements, the RW-01 adopts a distinctive triangular architecture defined by three circles — two barrels and a central reference balance wheel. This layout mirrors the visual language of the Ressence dial, reinforcing the idea that movement and display are part of the same ecosystem.

Manual winding has also been simplified. The RW-01 removes the traditional winding zone, allowing the watch to be wound freely through the caseback without restriction. Each movement carries its own unique serial number, emphasizing individuality and craftsmanship.

As Ressence founder and creative leader Benoît Mintiens puts it: the movement isn’t meant to be a showpiece. It’s an engine designed to drive the ROCS reliably and efficiently. The real complexity lies in how time is displayed — and having a proprietary movement allows both elements to function as a unified system.

A Watch Built for the Present

Mintiens describes the TYPE 11 as Ressence’s “Now” watch — contemporary without being futuristic.

While other models in the collection, like the TYPE 2 and TYPE 3, push further into experimental territory, the TYPE 11 embraces the codes of classic watchmaking while still embodying Ressence’s distinctive design philosophy. It respects tradition but refuses to be trapped by it.

That balance is what makes the TYPE 11 compelling. It doesn’t chase trends or nostalgia — it simply exists as a refined, modern watch that reflects the current moment in design and engineering.

The Ressence TYPE 11 is priced at RM123,100, positioning it firmly in the realm of serious collectors and design enthusiasts who appreciate thoughtful innovation over spectacle.
