SUEN Jewellers Turns Malay Sartorial Heritage Into Fine Jewellery With the Tita Collection
A meeting of tradition and contemporary design, the 33-piece collection transforms Malaysia’s rich textile history into 18K gold and diamond creations made to be worn today.
Heritage doesn’t have to live behind glass. Sometimes, it deserves a place in your jewellery box.
SUEN Jewellers is making a case for exactly that with the Tita Collection by SUEN, a 33-piece fine jewellery collection that draws from the beauty of Malay traditional dress, vintage jewellery and Malaysia’s treasured textile traditions. Unveiled on 24 September 2026, the collection brings these cultural references into the present through 18K gold and diamonds, proving that the past can be a rather stylish companion to the modern wardrobe.
At the heart of the collection is the legacy of Puan Azah Aziz, whose lifelong dedication to documenting and preserving Busana Melayu helped safeguard an important part of Malaysia’s sartorial heritage. Her extensive collection of traditional clothing, textiles and vintage jewellery became a record of the craftsmanship, techniques and cultural knowledge woven into Malay dress.
For Lee Sze Suen, Founder of SUEN Jewellers, the opportunity to reinterpret this legacy came through conversations with Tan Sri Dr Zeti Aziz, Puan Azah Aziz’s daughter, whose commitment to honouring her mother’s work became a key inspiration for the collection.
A Legacy Woven Into Every Detail
Puan Azah Aziz’s collection offers a glimpse into the intricacies of Malaysia’s textile heritage, from songket sarongs to Telepuk and Limar Baju Kurungs, alongside elaborately embroidered Tekat Emas. Each represents more than an appreciation for beautiful fabrics. They carry the stories of traditional craftsmanship and the cultural significance of the garments themselves.
Recognising the importance of preserving this knowledge for future generations, Tan Sri Dr Zeti Aziz donated her mother’s collection to the Merdeka Textile Museum. It is this commitment to keeping heritage alive that informs the Tita Collection by SUEN, with selected details and references reimagined in a form that can be appreciated beyond museum walls.
“Through my conversations with Tan Sri Zeti, I came to understand how much care Puan Azah gave to preserving the knowledge and craftsmanship held within Malaysian textiles and traditional dress. With Tita Collection by SUEN, we have translated selected references from her collection into fine jewellery that can be worn today, giving the new generation a personal way to encounter this heritage.”
For Lee, the intention is not simply to borrow from the past, but to create a contemporary connection to it. The result is a collection that gives traditional forms a new expression while keeping their cultural significance firmly in view.
From Traditional Textiles to Everyday Adornment
Crafted in 18K gold and diamonds, the 33-piece collection translates the patterns, textures and shapes found in Malaysian textiles and traditional dress into fine jewellery designed for contemporary life.
The pieces are made to work beyond special occasions, too. Styled with a tudung or selendang, or worn against the lapels and collars of modern tailoring, they offer a subtle way to bring heritage into everyday dressing without feeling bound by tradition.
It is an approach that makes the collection particularly compelling. Rather than treating cultural references as something reserved for ceremonial wear, SUEN gives them room to evolve with the person wearing them. The craftsmanship remains rooted in history, while the styling possibilities are very much of the present.
The project also extends beyond fine jewellery. In a separate collaboration with the Merdeka Textile Museum, SUEN has created six heritage-inspired brooches referencing the role of brooches in Malay dress and adornment. Drawing from batik, traditional wooden ukiran and songket, the designs are reinterpreted in gold-plated 925 sterling silver.
Together, these creations explore how traditional motifs can continue to find relevance through new materials, forms and ways of wearing them.
Jewellery With a Purpose
Beyond its celebration of Malaysian heritage, the Tita Collection by SUEN also carries a charitable commitment. Ten per cent of proceeds from the sale of the fine jewellery collection will be donated to Viva Palestina, extending the collection’s impact beyond design and craftsmanship.
Available exclusively at SUEN Jewellers, the Tita Collection offers a thoughtful reminder that heritage is not something that has to remain untouched to be respected. Through the considered reinterpretation of traditional textiles, dress and adornment, SUEN brings a piece of Malaysia’s cultural story into the present, one gold-and-diamond creation at a time.
