New Balance ABZORB 1890: Where Archive Energy Meets Visible Tech

The ABZORB 1890 does both at the same time.
Launching 12 March 2026 in Malaysia, New Balance’s latest lifestyle silhouette is a study in duality. It pulls from deep within the brand’s archive while stepping confidently into a future shaped by visible technology and intentional design. This is heritage, reworked for a generation that wants performance DNA with everyday versatility.
Built From the Past, Designed for Now
At first glance, the ABZORB 1890 feels familiar in the best way. Rooted in archival New Balance models, it carries the quiet authority of the brand’s running legacy. But look closer and you’ll see something more experimental at play.
The shoe joins the ABZORB family using the original 2002 sole unit, complete with full-length SBS ABZORB cushioning. The result is a dynamic and highly technical setup that delivers the comfort the cushioning system is known for, without compromising the silhouette’s shape.
Up top, the upper introduces motion and texture through a no-sew wave cutout pattern layered over exposed mesh, a direct nod to the design language of the 890v3. High-frequency welded reflective “teardrops” at the forefront add a futuristic detail that catches light and attention in equal measure.
This is not just retro revival. It is evolution with intention.
A Full-Circle Design Moment
For James Lee, Lead Designer at New Balance, the project carries personal significance.
“For projects that reference archival models, a lot of the design process is focused on refining and improving existing elements without losing what made them special in the first place,” said Lee. “The goal is always to strike the right balance—creating something that feels modern and compelling while still staying authentic. I’ve been at New Balance for long enough that the shoes I wore early in my career are now starting to show up as archive references, which is a pretty full-circle moment. I actually used to run in the 890v3 when it was on the market, so having the opportunity to modernise a silhouette I’m personally familiar with made the process especially fun and meaningful.”
That balance between nostalgia and forward motion sits at the heart of the 1890.
Seoul as the Stage
To bring the model’s spirit to life, the campaign was shot by photographer Nikolai Ahn against the kinetic backdrop of Seoul, South Korea. The city, long considered a nucleus of cultural influence, mirrors the shoe’s own tension between movement and stillness.
Ahn’s lens moves between playful urban streets and restorative natural landscapes, reinforcing the idea that the ABZORB 1890 is not just an accessory on display. It is a partner in discovery.
Malaysia Release Details
The ABZORB 1890 will be available in Malaysia from 12 March 2026 at newbalance.com.my and at New Balance stores in Pavilion KL and The Exchange TRX, retailing at RM799.
A second drop follows on 26 March 2026.
