IMMERSIO 2024 Lights Up Southeast Asia’s New Media Art Scene

Ready to have your mind blown? IMMERSIO 2024 kicks off today at GMBB in Kuala Lumpur, setting the stage for an electrifying exploration of new media art. From November 22 to December 22, this groundbreaking festival invites you to immerse yourself in a world where technology, culture, and creativity collide. And trust us, this isn’t your average art exhibition.

This year’s theme, “Maya”, draws from the Sanskrit word for “illusion” or “magic,” blending seamlessly with its Malay translation, “virtual.” It’s an invitation to question reality, explore myths, and reconnect with the stories that shape us. Curated by the visionary team at Filamen, IMMERSIO 2024 isn’t just a showcase—it’s a journey.

Triple the Thrill: What to Expect

1. The Maya Exhibition

Curated by Koh Kai Ting, this centerpiece exhibition dives deep into the concept of “Maya” through four thematic lenses: Chronopolitics, Quest, Diaspora, and Symbiosis. Think of it as a crash course in reimagining Southeast Asia’s social and cultural fabric, but with cutting-edge tech and dazzling visuals. Featuring 32 artists and collectives from across the region, the lineup includes local heavyweights like Arrvin Raj, Cahaya Create, and Suzy Sulaiman, alongside regional powerhouses such as Dara(h) Collective (Singapore/Indonesia) and Kinnara: Desi La (Japan).

2. Malaysia & Southeast Asia Collectives

This section celebrates the diversity of creative expression, with curated spaces for collectives from different Malaysian states and Southeast Asian countries. Whether it’s Kapallorek from Perak or GengRambutan from Indonesia, each collective offers a unique take on “Maya,” showcasing how cultural futurism meets modern technology.

3. INYALA: Student Showcase

The future of art is here. INYALA shines a spotlight on the next-gen creators from The One Academy, USM, and UiTM. Fresh ideas, experimental techniques, and unfiltered creativity take center stage, proving that the kids are indeed alright—and then some.

Breaking Boundaries

For Abdul Shakir, Co-founder of Filamen, IMMERSIO has always been about pushing the envelope. “This year, we’ve expanded our vision by bringing together artists not just from Southeast Asia but from every corner of Malaysia,” he says. It’s a bold step forward, one that celebrates the region’s artistic depth while imagining the future of storytelling.

Adding to the excitement is GMBB General Manager Lim Ying Hui, who passionately notes, “Art doesn’t exist without people. IMMERSIO’s focus on engaging the new media community aligns perfectly with GMBB’s mission to #makeMore together.
