Now, as this icon approaches its 60th birthday in 2025, Guerlain is reimagining the classic with a gutsy limited-edition release: Habit Rouge Spirit.

In an era of instant everything, Habit Rouge Spirit takes its time. Literally. For the first time in Guerlain’s history, a fragrance has been aged in oak barrels—yes, like fine wine or cognac. This technique, rooted in centuries-old French savoir-faire, was developed by Guerlain Director of Perfume Creation, Delphine Jelk, to deepen the character of the scent. As she puts it, “Driven by daring, Habit Rouge Spirit expresses the vision of a luxury that has become rare: time.”
Two barrels—each crafted from wood of different ages and aromatic properties—are used to enrich the original Habit Rouge Parfum. Over the course of several weeks, the liquid matures, evolving and unlocking surprising new olfactory dimensions. Once the aging process is complete, a meticulous blending phase begins to strike the perfect balance between heritage and innovation.
A Sensual Reinvention
What does patience smell like? It opens with a flash of citrus—Guerlain’s signature bergamot—only now with a smoother, more rounded edge. That zesty start quickly folds into a bold heart of warm nutmeg, elegant iris, and leathery spice. But the real seduction happens in the dry down: a rich, amber base woven with not one but two vanilla extractions—the absolute and the tincture—both produced at Guerlain’s historic Orphin facility.
