Onitsuka Tiger Just Rewrote the Ballet Sneaker Rulebook with “GYMNARINA”

There’s a certain kind of shoe that doesn’t ask for attention but still ends up getting it anyway. Enter the new “GYMNARINA™” from Onitsuka Tiger, a lace-up ballet-type silhouette that feels equal parts soft-spoken and sharply intentional.

Pronounced “jim-nah-ree-nah”, the design takes the delicate language of ballet flats and filters it through the brand’s sport heritage. The result is a slim, almost weightless-looking shoe that still carries structure where it counts.

At first glance, GYMNARINA feels like a departure. But look closer and you’ll spot familiar DNA pulled from the iconic Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66. The crossed heel detail, the heel flap, and those unmistakable Tiger Stripes are all reworked into something lighter, softer, and more fluid. It’s heritage, but edited.

The upper is crafted from high-quality soft leather, giving it a clean, almost satin-smooth finish. Shirring elastic runs through the design to create a gentle, flexible fit that moves with the foot instead of against it. Underneath, the outsole is built for stability and flexibility, keeping the silhouette dainty but still grounded enough for everyday wear.

What makes GYMNARINA interesting is that it doesn’t commit to one personality. It can shift depending on how you style it. Each pair comes with two lace options: flat shoelaces finished with metal aglets for a minimal, sporty edge, or satin ribbon laces that push the shoe into more romantic territory. It’s a small detail that completely changes the mood.

Colorways lean into that duality too. There’s the bold energy of “CLASSIC RED/CREAM” and “DAZZLING BLUE/CREAM”, the everyday ease of “BLACK/CREAM”, and then the more luminous finishes like “SILVER/CREAM” and “ROSE GOLD/CREAM”. Think of it as a spectrum between street and sheen.

GYMNARINA™ will be available from June 26 at Onitsuka Tiger stores nationwide and on the official online store. Retail price is RM 670.

It’s not quite a ballet flat. Not quite a sneaker either. It sits somewhere in between, where sport heritage meets something a little more graceful, and a lot more deliberate.
