Nobu Kuala Lumpur's Bold Take on Sustainability: A Live Tuna Auction and Exclusive Menu
At Nobu Kuala Lumpur, fine dining transcends the ordinary. This May, the iconic restaurant takes its commitment to sustainability to new heights, combining exceptional cuisine with a genuine dedication to community support, creating a dining experience that is as purposeful as it is indulgent.
A Rare Culinary Experience: The Live Tuna Auction
On May 9, Nobu KL hosted an extraordinary event, its first-ever Live Bluefin Tuna Auction. The evening brought together food lovers, philanthropists, and curious guests, offering a rare opportunity to witness the breakdown of a 70kg Bluefin tuna from Japan, as skilled chefs expertly prepared its prized cuts. But the auction wasn’t just a showcase of rare fish, it was about blending luxurious dining with giving back.
Guests were invited to bid on premium tuna cuts, with proceeds benefiting Food Bank Malaysia, an organization committed to reducing food waste and combating food insecurity. This event became more than just an opportunity to secure premium tuna, it was a chance to support a cause that champions sustainability and addresses critical food scarcity issues.
Sustainability at Heart: Supporting Food Bank Malaysia
True to its sustainability mission, Nobu KL allocated a portion of the auction’s proceeds to Food Bank Malaysia. Ily Kartini, the CSR & Partnerships Manager at Food Bank Malaysia, was on hand to share insights into the charity’s important work. This collaboration reinforces how high-end dining can play a role in reducing food waste and supporting communities in need.
From Auction to Plate: The Maguro Osusume Experience
Following the excitement of the auction, Nobu KL unveiled the Maguro Osusume menu, a month-long tribute to premium tuna that seamlessly blends culinary artistry with a deep commitment to sustainability. This menu goes beyond food, it’s a statement of conscious luxury, where every part of the tuna is honored, ensuring minimal waste while delivering maximum flavor.
Chef Philip Leong, Executive Chef at Nobu Kuala Lumpur, explained,
“In crafting this menu, we wanted to not only showcase the versatility and beauty of maguro but also tell a deeper story of sustainability and respect for the ingredients we work with. It has been a remarkable journey bouncing ideas off with my incredibly talented kitchen team – their creativity, precision, and passion have brought this menu to life. The Maguro Osusume is more than a dining experience; it’s a statement of how we, as chefs, can make conscious choices without compromising on indulgence.”
