FENDI’s Cultural Commitment Shines Through the Grotto of Diana Restoration

After nearly five decades of silence, the Grotto of Diana at Villa d’Este is finally opening its doors again on the 6th of May. This monumental moment comes after two years of meticulous restoration, ushering the Grotto back into the public eye, thanks to the tireless work of the Autonomous Institute of Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este – VILLÆ in Tivoli, along with the generous backing of FENDI, a Maison with a long history of championing cultural preservation.

Nestled beside the Palace of Ippolito d'Este, the Grotto was originally built between 1570 and 1572 by a skilled team of artisans. It had remained shut for decades, with the closure believed to date back to the 1980s. However, after extensive research and restoration that began in 2023, the Grotto of Diana is now more than just a historical relic. It’s a vibrant and living piece of cultural heritage, ready to be experienced by the public once again.

Andrea Bruciati, Director of the Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este Institute, reflects on the importance of this restoration: “This restoration is more than a project; it’s an exploration of the deep layers of meaning embedded in Villa d'Este. This place isn’t just beautiful – it embodies a sophisticated cultural vision that continues to speak through the ages. Our work here aims to push back against the loss and neglect that so often befall our cultural treasures. By reopening the Grotto of Diana, we bring this forgotten gem back to life, ensuring that future generations can engage with its beauty. Art history is a cognitive process, reshaped by these ‘re-emergences’ that blur the lines between the past and present. Ultimately, it’s a shared act of generosity, a public offering made possible by FENDI’s heartfelt support.”

Silvia Venturini Fendi, Artistic Director of Accessories and Menswear at FENDI, couldn’t have been more proud of the brand’s involvement: “For FENDI, restoring the Grotto of Diana is a labor of love. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to Italy’s cultural heritage, and it’s especially meaningful as we celebrate our centennial this year. Rooted in Rome since 1925, this project represents a promise to preserve the beauty of our country for the future – a dedication to passing on monuments like the Grotto to the generations to come.”

The reopening of the Grotto of Diana is more than just the revival of a physical space; it’s a celebration of the harmony between art and nature that Villa d’Este has represented for centuries. This restoration isn’t just about maintaining beauty—it’s about ensuring that the story of this extraordinary site is shared and cherished for years to come. Thanks to the collaboration between the Villa d’Este Institute and FENDI, this cultural treasure is no longer hidden from view, but will once again thrive as part of Italy’s living history.
